Your Green Home

Green houseBeing smart about your energy use doesn’t mean you have to make big sacrifices or big changes. Start with your personal space, your home. Some simple changes around the house can shrink your “carbon footprint," save money on your utilities, and even make your home more comfortable. That’s important to stress: money saving and more comfortable!

Be comfortable with energy saving

  1. Find out where it's escaping: My Home Comfort Check Up Use Alliant Energy’s online home energy audit to find out how your house uses energy and pinpoint energy wasters. Then, learn what projects can help improve your home’s efficiency.
  2. Install and use a programmable thermostat: why heat or cool your home while you're away? Program it to go back to a comfortable temperature by the time you get home. See how much you can save with our programmable thermostat calculator.
  3. Weatherize and insulate: Adding insulation and weatherizing (sealing cracks) keeps the conditioned air inside your house, keeping you comfortable and decreasing the demands on your heating and cooling system.
  4. Change light bulbs: compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) come in many styles and natural-looking light colors. Use our CFL calculator to find out how much you can save by switching to CFLs.
  5. Low flow showerheads and faucet aerators: You might be surprised by the improvements to low-flow showerheads. Low-flow showerheads deliver significantly higher water pressure now (so you can get all of the shampoo out of your hair!).
