Transportation

Quick – where do you have to be today? How are you going to get there? And can you get there in an environmentally friendly way?

If you’re like most people, you can answer the first two questions - it’s the third one that you’re not too sure about. Walking is by far the greenest way to get to where you’re going, but it isn’t always practical if it involves groceries, foul weather or long distances. There are many ways you can green-up your transportation options, even using your current vehicle.

Improve your gas mileage: Transportation accounts for 67% of U.S. oil use - mainly in the form of gasoline. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to improve gas mileage.

  • Avoid aggressive driving and observe the speed limit. Speeding, fast acceleration, and hard braking wastes gas. It can lower your highway gas mileage 33% and city mileage 5%.
  • Lighten your load by clearing your car of extra weight.
  • Keep current with car maintenance - clean air filters can improve gas mileage by as much as 10%.
