Q: What would be the best CFL to use in kitchen overhead globe light? The fixture says max. 60W. Also, does the color of the bulb matter? It seems like one of the CFL bulbs burned out to quickly. One bulb was white and the other was almost amber color. What is your recommendation?

A: You can replace a 60 watt incandescent bulb with a 15 watt CFL. Choose the bulb color that best suits the tasks you do in a room. The ENERGY STAR Web site has helpful tips on choosing the right bulb color.

An ENERGY STAR qualified CFL could save about $30 over its lifetime and pay for itself in about 6 months. It uses 75 percent less energy and lasts about 10 times longer than an incandescent bulb. While this has not been the case in your home, given the continued reduction in price, cash-back rewards on the purchase of ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs from Alliant Energy, and reduced energy consumption, the CFL would still appear to be a great investment in your home.

If you find this is a reoccurring problem, you may want to consider looking into the power quality of your home. Up to 80 percent of all power surges originate within the home. When devices with motors shut off or start up, energy is diverted to and from other appliances. Common culprits of internal surges are power tools, refrigerators, printers and hair dryers. This could contribute to the short lifespan of your CFL bulbs. A certified electrician can assist with the diagnosis and repair.
